Camping by Platja d'Altafulla

Platja d'Altafulla is a picture-perfect village beach framed by the medieval silhouette of Tamarit Castle on one end and the old fishing quarter on the other. Just five kilometres from Camping La Noria, it is one of the most photogenic stretches of sand on the Costa Dorada.

Platja d'Altafulla
The beach at Altafulla curves gently for about 700 metres between the rocky promontory of Tamarit Castle and the pastel-coloured houses of the Vila Closa, the village's fortified medieval core. The sand is fine and golden, the water clear and typically calm, sheltered by the headlands on either side. Families appreciate the gentle slope into the sea and the manageable size — you can see your children from almost any point on the beach. Tamarit Castle, a privately owned medieval fortress perched on the rocks above the southern end of the beach, provides a dramatic backdrop that has attracted painters and photographers for generations. While the castle itself is only open for private events, the view from the beach is stunning, particularly at sunset when the warm light catches the ancient stone walls. The village of Altafulla adds to the appeal. The Vila Closa — the walled medieval quarter — is a compact maze of stone streets, arched doorways and flower-draped balconies. There are a handful of excellent restaurants, ice cream shops and small boutiques, all within a minute's walk of the sand. It has the feel of a quiet Catalan village rather than a tourist resort, which is precisely its charm. A seafront promenade connects the beach to the old town and continues along the coast, making for a lovely evening stroll. The beach has lifeguard service in summer, along with sun-lounger and umbrella rental. Water quality is consistently high. From Camping La Noria, you can reach Altafulla in about five minutes by car or 15 minutes by bicycle along the coastal road. It makes a pleasant change of scenery from the campsite's home beach of Muntanyans, and the village atmosphere is ideal for a long lunch and a lazy afternoon.

Why Visit Platja d'Altafulla

Altafulla offers the quintessential Costa Dorada beach experience: golden sand, calm sea, a medieval castle on the headland and an authentic Catalan village behind the beach. It is near enough to Camping La Noria for a spontaneous afternoon trip, yet feels like a different world from the larger resort towns. The combination of natural beauty and architectural charm is hard to beat.

How to Get There

Drive or cycle 5 km north-east from Camping La Noria along the N-340 or the coastal side road. Parking in Altafulla is limited in summer — the paid lot near the beach fills quickly, so cycling or arriving early is recommended.

Best Time to Visit

The beach is wonderful from May through October. June and September are the sweet spot — warm enough for comfortable swimming but much less crowded than July and August. Sunset is particularly magical, with the light hitting Tamarit Castle. The village's annual festa major in late August brings fireworks, sardanes and a lively atmosphere.

Tips

  • Cycle from the campsite along the coastal road — it is flat, scenic and avoids parking hassles in summer.
  • Walk through the Vila Closa after your beach visit; the medieval streets are charming and there are good restaurants.
  • Bring snorkelling gear for the rocky areas near the Tamarit headland — the water clarity is excellent.
