Camping Near the GR-92 Coastal Path

The GR-92 is Spain's Mediterranean coastal long-distance trail, stretching over 580 kilometres along the entire Catalan coast. What makes it special for guests at Camping La Noria is that the trail passes directly by the campsite — step out of your pitch and you are on one of Europe's great walking routes.

The GR-92 (Sender del Mediterrani) hugs the coastline from Portbou on the French border to Ulldecona in southern Catalonia. The section near Camping La Noria is particularly rewarding, combining clifftop paths with sea views, hidden coves, coastal scrubland and connections to nearby towns and beaches. Heading north from the campsite, the trail climbs gently above the coast towards Altafulla, passing rocky headlands, viewpoints over the sea, and the photogenic ruins of Tamarit Castle. This section is about five kilometres and takes around 90 minutes at a relaxed pace — perfect for a morning walk before returning to the campsite for lunch. Along the way, you pass several small coves ideal for a swimming detour. South of the campsite, the GR-92 leads towards Torredembarra's harbour and continues to Creixell and beyond. This stretch is flatter and follows the coastline more closely, making it suitable for families with younger children or anyone who prefers easy terrain. The path is well-marked with the red-and-white waymarks standard to all GR routes in Europe. Most of the trail near the campsite is on natural paths, boardwalks over dune areas and quiet coastal roads. You do not need specialist equipment — good walking shoes, sun protection, water and a hat are sufficient. For serious hikers, the campsite provides a strategic base for multi-day explorations along the GR-92. You can walk a different section each day and return by train — the Rodalies R17 line parallels the coast and has stations at most of the towns along the trail, creating a natural shuttle system. The beauty of having the GR-92 at your doorstep is the flexibility it offers. Fancy a short walk before breakfast? Step onto the trail. Want a full-day coastal hike? Follow the waymarks as far as you like. It is the ultimate amenity for active families staying at Camping La Noria.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) are the finest hiking seasons — mild temperatures, wildflowers or autumn light, and empty trails. Summer mornings (before 10:00) and late afternoons (after 17:00) are also good, but midday is too hot for exposed coastal walking. Winter can be pleasant for walking, though the campsite is closed.

Tips

  • Carry plenty of water, especially in summer — there are few fountains on the coastal sections between towns.
  • Use the Rodalies R17 train as a one-way shuttle: hike north to Altafulla or south to Tarragona, then catch the train back to Torredembarra.
  • Download the Wikiloc app for detailed GPS tracks of each GR-92 section with user photos and notes.
